Every day many pets encounter health conditions in which a blood product transfusion can mean the difference between life and death. Trauma, autoimmune disorders, and rodenticide toxicities are just a few of the circumstances where these products are often a lifesaving measure.
Blood products have a very short shelf life and having readily accessible donors is pivotal in maintaining a blood bank in order to provide timely, lifesaving treatments. While commercial blood banks exist, cost, distance, and shipping times all make community-based programs more sustainable and effective for pets to get the fresh blood products they need, when they need it.
All of our blood donors are loved members of families who understand the importance of blood donation. We are always welcoming new candidates who may be interested in joining our blood donor program and encourage you to contact us for more information. Potential donors should be:
- Healthy dogs between 1 and 6 years of age
- Weigh at least 50lbs (25kg)
- Have a calm and friendly disposition
- Have never had a blood transfusion themselves
