Bailey’s Place is our self-catered owner-run rehab program (like a gym membership) available to owners who need a cost-effective option to safely exercise their arthritic or senior dogs (or cats!) in a controlled environment in one of our underwater treadmills and/or swim spa. It also serves as a fitness or weight loss program for pets that may need ongoing strengthening or simply as a way of keeping them “fit”. Membership also includes access to our exercise equipment when not in use by another pet who is in a guided rehab session.

Membership
Who can join? Pet owners can access the facility directly, without referral. A health assessment called a “fit to swim”, performed by one of VCA Canada’s 404’s rehab certified veterinarians, is required to ensure that there are no health concerns that would make hydrotherapy unsafe (heart disease for example), to establish a baseline of a pet’s starting level of fitness, and to ensure there are no orthopaedic concerns which could be aggravated (or better yet, to allow for a tailor made rehabilitation program to help). Dogs who have had recent orthopaedic surgery must be seen through the rehabilitation service to undergo a full rehabilitation assessment and appropriate rehabilitation prior to entering the fitness program.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation provides optimal patient outcomes following orthopaedic and neurosurgery, and is a key element in a number of non-surgical neurological conditions (eg. Fibrocartilagenous Emboli (FCEM), Coonhound Paralysis and Degenerative myelopathy).

Our rehabilitation specialist will work to diagnose and treat a variety of soft tissue complaints such as iliopsoas and biceps muscle strains, neurorehabilitation and orthopaedic conditions.

Rehabilitation also alleviates pain from chronic conditions such as arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia and helps to maintain healthy body weight, mobility and muscle mass (especially in senior pets).

Our mission is to support and enable healing and strengthening in our patients and empower their parents to become part of that process.
