Dermatological conditions in dogs and cats are very common; in fact, they are one of the most common reasons dogs present to their family veterinarian. There are many different skin diseases recognized in the dog and cat. Many conditions look almost identical, making dermatology a very challenging specialty. A thorough history and subtle clinical differences will aid in the diagnosis and treatment of these often frustrating disorders.

Our board-certified veterinary dermatologists have special training in diagnosing and treating skin disorders, such as allergic dermatitis, ear problems, paw and nail disorders, immune-mediated skin diseases and cancers. Allergies, both environmental and food, are the most common disorders dealt with by veterinary dermatologists. Dogs and cats may develop food sensitivities at any age, to an ingredient in a diet they have been consuming for years. Environmental allergies (“atopic dermatitis”) is a multifactorial disorder involving genetic factors, immunologic dysregulation and an abnormal epidermal (skin) barrier. Treatment of atopic dermatitis is complex, involving multimodal therapies.

Here at VCA Canada 404 our dermatologists are up to date on the diverse group of current medications and treatment options, some of which are only available to Dermatologists. We use these methods to treat and manage chronic allergies and skin conditions as well as acute episodes. Our Dermatologist also utilize intradermal allergy testing which has been considered the gold standard to determine the offending allergens to include in immunotherapy and remains the principal testing method used by veterinary dermatologists today.
