Working With You

We know that entrusting your patients to another doctor is a serious responsibility. At VCA Canada, we want you to know that your referred patients will receive only the best care from us. You always can count on us to be your partners in health care. We have a full range of services and specialists to meet the needs presented by even your most challenging cases.

Please feel free to contact us for a tour and to meet our staff. And be sure to sign up to receive information about educational sessions, clinical trials and other professional news.

Emergency Veterinary Services:

Please refer emergency cases to us at any time, day or night. Wait times will vary according to patient load and our triage system.

In the case of after-hours admissions, we will notify you the next business day of their current status and condition. If appropriate, we are happy to transfer the animal back to your clinic for continued care or we will arrange for referral to one of our specialists for further testing or treatment.

Veterinary Referral Services and Resources
Guardian offers specialty services in the fields of

  • Cardiology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Critical Care

To make the referral process convenient, we offer online referrals.

Referrals are processed as soon as they are received. Our reception staff will contact the client directly to set up an appointment at the client’s convenience. For any referral patient, please send all pertinent medical records, diagnostic results and diagnostic imaging (radiographs and ultrasound images) with the online referral or with the client.

Urgent Cases

Urgent cases can be referred to us immediately by calling and discussing the case with the intended specialist ahead of time. This allows us to admit the patient as quickly as possible to start diagnostic tests and treatment. At times, transfer of emergency patients to one of our specialty services is recommended. Prior to confirming this with a client, we will make every attempt to notify you and discuss the case in detail.

Follow Up

Following consultation with a referral patient, our specialists will contact you via phone or faxed referral letter to let you know what was discussed, what has been planned, and what to expect with respect to continued care.

Our specialists are available to our referring veterinarians for telephone consultation, and we encourage you to call with any questions. Although specialists may not be immediately available, we will return your call as soon as possible.
