My pet has an emergency. Do I need an appointment?

No! Our Emergency Service is available on a walk-in basis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If urgent care is required, proceed immediately to Guardian Veterinary Centre at 5620 99th Street.

If time allows, please call our front desk at 780-436-5880 and let us know the nature of your pet’s problem and expected time of arrival. This may expedite your pet’s treatment.

I’m not sure my pet is okay, they are not acting normal. What should I do?

Pets can’t tell us when something is wrong or if they don’t feel well. When in doubt, please bring your pet to us so they can be assessed by a knowledgeable veterinarian.

Delaying diagnosis or treatment may cause more pain for your pet. We’re open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so visit us any time, day or night.

What is a veterinary specialist?

Veterinary specialists must complete many years of schooling and extensive training. After receiving their veterinary degree, specialists complete a one or two year internship, followed by a three year residency in their specialty field. Once they successfully complete special examinations, they are granted “Diplomate” status within their chosen field.

Guardian has specialists in the fields of Surgery, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Cardiology.

How do I arrange an appointment to see a specialist?

Consultations with a specialist are arranged by referral from your primary care or neighbourhood veterinarian. Your veterinarian will submit a request for referral to our office. We will contact you as soon as we receive this request to schedule an appointment.

I don’t have a regular veterinarian. Can I make an appointment at Guardian Veterinary Centre?

If your pet requires immediate care please visit our Emergency Department, which does not require an appointment. Transfer to a specialist for further care can occur if necessary.

We do not see patients for ‘routine’ or preventative care, such as vaccinations or dental hygiene.

My pet was brought into the emergency service at Guardian Veterinary Centre and requires further treatment. How is this arranged?

There are three possible outcomes following a visit to Emergency:

  • In many cases no further treatment is required and your pet goes home with you
  • Ongoing treatment may be arranged with your primary care veterinarian, or
  • Your pet may be transferred to one of our specialists for further care

Our emergency doctors will discuss your pet’s condition with your primary care veterinarian and with our specialists to determine the best option for you and your pet.

What financial arrangements can I make at Guardian Veterinary Centre?

We understand that emergency or specialty veterinary fees are unexpected. While we do not offer financing, we can facilitate financing through a third-party.

Please note that deposits for service are required at the time of admission to our hospital. We also facilitate claims through all Pet Insurance carriers on behalf of our clients.

  • Specialty Consultations: 9:00am – 4:00pm,  Monday – Friday

Can I visit my pet while in hospital at Guardian Veterinary Centre?

Yes! Visits are important for both you and your pet. Visitation can be scheduled at any time but please avoid visiting while our staff complete morning rounds, between 8:00 and 9:30 am daily.
My pet has undergone treatment at Guardian Veterinary Centre. Who is responsible for after care and follow up visits?

In most cases, we encourage follow-up with your primary care veterinarian. However, in some cases your pet may require specific follow-up with our specialty services. We will discuss this with you and your primary care veterinarian upon release from the hospital.
