Rehabilitation Services

Our hospital offers several exciting types of physical rehabilitation therapies to help your pet. The goal is to overcome injuries, stiffness, and lameness. Rehabilitative therapy is also used to help manage pain from chronic disorders, such as arthritis, cruciate injury, and disc disease. We take an integrative approach to therapy by addressing both the cause of the problem and the symptoms. We want to maximize performance and incorporate wellness for our patients through post-surgery therapies and/or preventative physical conditioning.

The following rehabilitation therapies are offered:

  • Chiropractic

  • Acupuncture

  • Electro Acupuncture

  • Therapeutic Exercise

  • Under Water Treadmill

  • Extracorpeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

  • Laser Therapy

A Comprehensive Assessment:
A integrative exam is performed to assess the patient. The exam may include a range of motion measurements, muscle evaluation, joint evaluation, reflexes, proprioception testing, neck and back assessment, and gait analysis.

Chiropractic therapy is based on spinal manipulation. There is a focus between the neurologic mechanisms and the biomechanics of the spine. Chiropractic therapy is used to treat pain, lack of mobility and help to improve athletic performance. This therapy can help address spondylosis, extremity lameness, pain, muscle spasm and immobility.

Acupuncture’s most common use is in the treatment of pain. Very fine needles are place in specific loci in the area that is affected. Most patients tolerate the needles and relax during treatment.

Electrical Stimulation:
In rehabilitation, electrical stimulation is used to treat orthopedic and neurological diseases. The focus is to target the diseases that cause acute or chronic pain and muscle atrophy. Low frequency alternating currents are used that pulsate the affected areas.

Therapeutic Exercises:
Home therapeutic exercises are an integral part of rehabilitation for our patients. The goal of the exercises are to improve mobility, add strength and endurance by decreasing pain. All orthopedic, soft tissue and neurological cases are excellent candidates for therapeutic exercises.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT):
ESWT is another form of therapy that is used to treat pain associated with arthritis and tendinopathies. Short-term pain relief may occur but it is used for the long-term analgesic effects. Three treatments are done over a 10-14 day period. Pain relief is expected within four month period.

Underwater Treadmill:
The underwater treadmill offers the benefit of buoyancy, which decreases the weight placed on joints during the session. This therapy can be used to improve gait, gain muscle mass, and increase the range of motion in many of our patients. This is the most popular form of therapy at our hospital.

Laser Therapy:
Therapeutic laser therapy uses light energy at specific frequencies to cause a physiological change at a cellular level and can help with pain and inflammation. It promotes healing of many tissues in the body including muscles and tendons. Laser therapy is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including; osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc disease, lick granulomas, cellulitis and others. Both the patient and the owner are required to wear goggles (or doggles!) to protect their eyes during the procedure.
