Dr. Francesco Piana is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) joining the VCA team at Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital (TVEH) and 404 Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital.
Originally from Italy’s renowned “Food Valley,” Dr. Piana graduated with honours in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Parma in 2014. He relocated to the U.K. in 2017, gaining valuable experience in general practice and emergency care before completing an orthopaedic surgical internship at Fitzpatrick Referrals (2019). He went on to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Practice from the University of Bristol (2020), where he also completed a three-year residency in small animal surgery (2021-2024). Dr. Piana achieved European Board certification with the ECVS in 2025.
Dr. Piana has authored several peer-reviewed publications in small animal surgery and has presented at both national and international conferences. He maintains active research interests focused on orthopaedic outcomes and surgical complications.
His clinical interests include routine orthopaedics, fracture management, minimally invasive procedures, oncology and soft tissue surgery, including thoracic and emergency procedures. Dr. Piana is committed to collaborative, evidence-based surgical care and is passionate about mentoring junior colleagues and contributing to continuing education.
Outside of work, he enjoys sports, exploring the outdoors, travelling, and discovering Toronto’s vibrant food scene.
