What is deslorelin?

Deslorelin (brand names: SucroMate, Suprelorin FSuprelorin 12, Suprelorin-6) is a synthetic hormone used to induce ovulation and manage artificial insemination programs in horses, modulate reproduction in dogs, or manage adrenal disease in ferrets.

In the U.S., deslorelin is only FDA approved for use in mares and ferrets, and ‘off label’ or ‘extra-label’ use is prohibited at this time. In countries that allow extra-label use, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions very carefully as their direction may be significantly different from those on the label.

How is deslorelin given?

Deslorelin is administered into the muscle or under the skin in the form of an injectable liquid suspension or implant, typically only by a veterinarian. Do not give this medication intravenously. Pregnant women or women who intend to become pregnant should handle this medication cautiously and avoid direct contact with skin. Do not use in animals intended for food.

This medication should take effect within a few hours, however, effects may not be noted outwardly and therefore laboratory tests may need to be done to evaluate this medication’s efficacy.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

The missed dose should be given as soon as you remember, and then wait the recommended amount of time between doses. Never give your pet two doses at once or give extra doses.

Are there any potential side effects?

The most common side effects include swelling, sensitivity, and redness or warmth at the injection site. Rarely reported side effects in dogs include prolonged estrus and uterine infections.

This moderate-acting medication should stop working in several days, although effects can last longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

Do not use this medication in pets that are allergic to it. Use in pregnant or nursing pets is not recommended as it decreases maternal care and lactation.

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

At this time, drug interactions have not been reported.

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.

Is there any monitoring that needs to be done with this medication?

There is no specific monitoring that needs to be done while your pet is taking this medication. Your veterinarian may monitor your pet to be sure that the medication is working.

How do I store deslorelin?

Store this medication in the refrigerator, between 36°F and 46°F (2°C and 8°C).

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
