What is dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen?

Dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen (brand name Vectra3D®) is a topical (spot-on) antiparasitic drug used to repel and kill fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies, sand flies, and biting or chewing lice in dogs and puppies that are at least 8 weeks of age and weigh at least 5 lb (2.3 kg).

This medication is labeled for use in dogs only. Do not use in cats. Do not confuse this medication with Vectra®, a similar product that does not contain permethrin.

How do I give my pet dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen?

• Dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen comes in topical solution form.
• Topical solutions are applied directly onto the skin. Part the fur at the base of the head and apply the product directly to visible skin, according to manufacturer instructions.
• Do not apply to broken skin or wet fur.
• Do not allow other animals (especially cats) to lick or groom the application site for at least 24 hours after application.
• Do not allow this medication to touch the eyes or mouth.
• Humans should avoid direct contact with the application site for 24 hours after this medication is applied.
• Avoid using this medication in households with cats, if possible. If that is not possible, treated dogs should be separated from cats and avoid all contact with cats for at least 24 hours after application.

This medication will take effect in about 6 to 8 hours and the effects will last several weeks.

Is any monitoring needed with this medication?

• Your veterinarian will let you know when and how they want to reassess your pet to ensure the medication is working and not causing side effects. 
• At home, monitor for any side effects such as those noted above. If any occur, stop using the medication and contact your veterinarian.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember, and then wait the recommended time for the next dose, as prescribed by your veterinarian. Do not give the pet two doses at once or give extra doses.

Are there any potential side effects?

Dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen may cause the following side effects:

• Redness, itching, or irritation at site of application
• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Unusual behavior

Serious adverse reactions may occur. If any of the following signs develop, stop giving dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen and contact your veterinarian immediately:

• An allergic reaction such as irregular breathing, rash, fever, puffiness and swelling around the face

Drug sensitivities can develop over time with repeated exposure. Your pet may have no reaction after the first few doses but may develop a sensitivity later. It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction over the entire course of treatment and notify your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. This long-acting medication lasts for several weeks, although effects can be longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

DO NOT USE in:

• Cats (permethrin is poisonous to cats and any exposure may be fatal)

USE WITH CAUTION in:

• Dogs that are sick or weak
• Dogs that are pregnant or nursing
• Dogs that are used for breeding
• Dogs that are taking other flea and tick preventives

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

Certain medications should be USED WITH CAUTION when given with dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen, including:

• Other medications used for flea and tick prevention

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking before starting any new treatment.

How do I store dinotefuran + permethrin + pyriproxyfen?

• Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place.
• Protect from freezing.
• Keep medication out of reach of children and pets.

What should I do in case of emergency?

If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility. Be prepared to provide information about the product and your pet's weight and symptoms.
