What is imidacloprid?
Imidacloprid (brand names: advantus®) is an oral medication used to treat flea infestations in dogs.
How quickly does it kill fleas?
Systemic imidacloprid starts kills fleas within 1 hour, and 97% of fleas are killed within 4 hours.
How is imidacloprid given?
Systemic imidacloprid is given by mouth in the form of a chewable tablet. Your dog should be weighed prior to administering this medication to ensure the correct dose. This medication will take effect quickly, in about 1 to 2 hours, and improvement in clinical signs should follow.
What if I forget to give my dog the medication, or my shipment is late?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember, and then wait the recommended amount of time between doses. Never give your dog two doses at once or give extra doses. Do not give more than one tablet per day.
Are there any potential side effects?
Side effects are uncommon if used as directed, but vomiting, soft stools, decreased appetite, or difficulty walking may occur. Serious side effects that could indicate an allergic reaction include noisy breathing, collapse, or pale gums.
This short-acting medication should stop working within 24 hours, although effects can be longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?
Oral imidacloprid should not be used in puppies younger than 10 weeks of age or weighing less than 4 pounds, or in pregnant or lactating dogs. Do not use this medication in cats. Use cautiously in debilitated and geriatric dogs.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

How do I store imidacloprid?
Store at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C) and protect from light.
What should I do in case of emergency?
If you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately. If they are not available, follow their directions in contacting an emergency facility.
