What is miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA topical?

Miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA topical (brand name MiconaHex+Triz®) is an antifungal and antimicrobial cleansing agent used in the treatment of surface skin infections and to enhance the effectiveness of other topical antibiotics in cats and dogs.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not review non-drug health products (e.g., herbals, nutraceuticals, shampoos, and other supplements) for safety or effectiveness before they are sold to the public. Manufacturers of non-drug health products must ensure their products are safe and labeled accurately.

The FDA requires that these products contain a disclaimer that says, “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” Health Canada licenses “veterinary health products” after reviewing safety, efficacy, and manufacturing information provided by the manufacturer. These products are not tested by Health Canada.

Your veterinarian is the best source of information about the safety of veterinary health products in pets. These products can also have side effects, like pharmaceuticals. How do I give my pet miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA?

• Miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA comes in spray, mousse, shampoo, and wipe forms.
• All forms are applied topically directly to the affected surface.
• Clean the affected area as directed by your veterinarian before applying the medication.
• Apply this medication 15 to 30 minutes before other topical medications.
• Wash your hands after application.
• Do not allow your pet to groom or lick the affected site.
• Give this medication to your pet for the entire time prescribed by your veterinarian, even if it appears that your pet is feeling better.

This medication should take effect in 1 to 2 days, but its effects may not be noticeable for a few days.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

If you miss an application, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the missed application and resume the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

Are there any potential side effects from miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA?

Miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA may cause the following side effects:

• Redness, itching, or irritation at site of application

Serious adverse reactions may occur. If any of the following signs develop, stop giving and contact your veterinarian immediately:

• An allergic reaction such as irregular breathing, rash, fever, puffiness and swelling around the face

Drug sensitivities can develop over time with repeated exposure. Your pet may have no reaction after the first few doses, but may develop a sensitivity later. It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction over the entire course of treatment. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. This short-acting medication should stop working within 24 hours.

Are there any risk factors for this medication?

DO NOT USE miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA topical in:

• Pets that are allergic to any component or allergic to other azole antifungals

USE WITH CAUTION in:

• Pets with burned or ulcerated skin

Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?

There are no documented drug interactions for this supplement. Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking before starting any new treatment.

Is any monitoring needed with this medication?

• Your veterinarian will let you know when and how they want to reassess your pet to ensure the supplement is working and not causing side effects.
• At home, monitor for abnormal changes. If any occur, discontinue the medication and contact your veterinarian.

How do I store miconazole + chlorhexidine + tris-EDTA?

• Store the medication in its original container, protected from heat, at room temperature.
