Dr Caulkett grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. After spending a year in mixed animal practice he returned to WCVM to pursue a residency and graduate program in veterinary anesthesiology. He obtained board certification in 1994 and was hired on Faculty the same year. He remained at WCVM as a professor until 2006, with his time split between teaching, research and clinical anesthesiology. In 2006 he moved to Calgary to help start the new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM). He served as the founding head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Science and continued to teach, practice clinical anesthesiology and pursue research interests in animal welfare, shock and wildlife anesthesia. During his time at UCVM he has worked as a consulting anesthesiologist at VCA CARE and Moore equine. He has taught veterinary anesthesiology at a number of practices in the distributed veterinary learning community. He enjoys anesthesiology of all species and has a particular interest in anesthesia of trauma patients, geriatric patients and cardiac patients.
