The VCA Canada Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital Anesthesia and Analgesia Department consists of board-certified veterinary anesthesiologists as well as some veterinary technicians who are specialty certified in anesthesia as well. Our entire team is passionate about providing the safest, most skilled, and knowledgeable anesthetic and analgesic care to your pet at all times.

Our job is to minimize the risk of sedation and anesthesia to each patient by utilizing a detail-oriented and individualized approach to case management and to ensure that each patient is monitored at all times by members of our qualified team. Our team works closely with all other hospital clinical services to provide interdisciplinary case management in addition to our own specialty expertise. The anesthesia and analgesia service undertakes a serious approach to pain management and mitigating a patient’s anxiety at all stages of their stay in hospital, both before and after a procedure has been undertaken so that your pet’s experience during their stay is as beneficial to their welfare as possible.

We offer the following advanced anesthetic and analgesic techniques:

  • Procedural sedation
  • Inhalant and injectable general anesthesia
  • Ultrasound-guided and nerve stimulation-guided locoregional anesthesia
  • Basic anesthetic monitoring
  • Advanced anesthetic monitoring including arterial catheter placement, central lines, and spirometry
  • Critical patient stabilization and optimization
  • Blood component therapy
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Management of difficult airways
  • Pain management consultations

Our anesthesia team also provides a dedicated patient care technician, under the direction of the anesthesiologist, to ensure that each patient receives a well-supported recovery from all procedures. Any patients requiring a higher degree of monitoring and care will be admitted to our intensive care unit under the supervision of a board-certified critical care specialist to ensure the best possible outcome for each pet.
