At TVEH, our Neurologists include Dr. Andrew Barker and Dr. Gibrann Castillo. Both have extensive experience managing a wide range of neurological conditions.

Brain, spinal cord and neuromuscular disorders occur in dogs and cats, just as in humans. Pets can develop a variety of problems, including epilepsy, disc disease, spinal cord and head trauma, meningitis and cancer.

Diagnosis of some neurological disorders can be challenging. The Neurology service at TVEH offers specialized on-site diagnostic procedures, including CSF collection and analysis, nerve and muscle biopsy, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The Neurology/Neurosurgery service offers a complete range of surgical procedures for management of disc disease, trauma, and neoplastic disease in dogs and cats. Neurology referral appointment are available 5 days a week and our neurologists are available after hours for emergency surgery.

Commonly provided surgical procedures include:

• Pediculectomy
• Dorsal Laminectomy
• "Ventral slot" spinal cord decompression
• Spinal stabilization/fracture repair

Dr. Barker and Dr. Castillo are backed by our 24-hour Emergency Department that can provide urgent care for neurologic patients requiring immediate attention. The Neurology service works cooperatively with Critical Care, Radiology, Anesthesia, Internal Medicine, Surgery and other specialty services. Our team works in collaboration with your family veterinarian to achieve good long-term management of your pet's condition.
