Paw It Forward is VCA Canada’s (VCAC) national philanthropic program driven by our Cultural Value of Community Leadership. This program engages the entire community – VCAC and our clients, local supporting agencies and their clients, our vendor partners – in Helping People Make Pets’ Lives Better. Paw It Forward covers our extensive campaign of national, regional and local community endeavors: from supporting local humane societies, rescue groups and SPCAs; to enhancing awareness and learning of animal health and welfare issues; to providing food for displaced pets across Canada; to supporting and assisting local families and pets in need.
We understand the impact caring for pets has on pet parents. The human-animal bond creates a unique relationship that is everlasting and unlike any other. Caring for pets can ease loneliness, reduce stress and anxiety, promote social interaction, and encourage exercise. Pets are non-judgmental, loyal and trustworthy. They provide unconditional love and affection as well as social and emotional support. No matter your circumstances, pets can provide a deep sense of comfort. For families dealing with hardship or are just getting by, the importance of this bond can be even more critical to their overall well-being. Pets are a cherished member of many families, and can potentially be one’s only family.
VCA Canada is well aware of the importance of the human-animal bond. We know that it is not uncommon for marginalized pet owners to sacrifice their own food for their pets. We understand that many such pet owners struggle to provide medical care, vaccinations and spaying or neutering for their beloved animals. In response, we have created Paw It Forward to assist these pet owners by strengthening their connection to their pets and celebrating the bond. We provide millions of dollars each year in support through Paw It Forward.
The Pet Food Pantry, as part of the Paw It Forward program, is a community outreach initiative that provides quality pet food and support for dogs and cats whose families are in need. Our approach is non-judgmental and empathetic. It is clear that not all pets are fortunate enough to be in a home that is financially able to take care of all their needs to the highest level. That being said, we do feel that these pets deserve quality food, and they deserve a supportive ear to help them to make the best decisions for their pet. The human-animal bond, and the connection to the community, is core to The Pet Food Pantry. While we are unable to operate veterinary clinics at these events, we are able to direct them to other appropriate agencies where a more clinical approach is offered. We welcome support from any organization who aligns with the basic philosophy of The Pet Food Pantry, and seeks to celebrate the human-animal bond.
Together, with the support of our partners, Paw It Forward has provided over 800 000 meals to pets in need across Canada. If you would like to Paw It Forward and help our Pet Food Pantry, please stop by one of our family of hospitals, click on our FAQ, or reach out to us at [email protected]
