Dr. Gurney was born and raised in Victoria, and graduated from UVic with a BSc in 1987. In 1991 he fulfilled his childhood dream when he graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon and obtained his DVM degree. After several years in general practice, Dr. Gurney joined the emergency department at Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital where he is now the Medical Director of Emergency Services.
His primary professional interests are in emergency and critical care, endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery. He is an active member of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society as well as the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Dr. Gurney has completed many courses in both rigid and flexible endoscopy at the Ontario Veterinary College, Colorado State University, University of Georgia and Washington State University.
Dr. Gurney leads a happy and active life with his wife Lisa, their daughters Alex and Haley and Cairn terriers Ferris and Gidget. Their family motto is “try to be the person your dog thinks you are”, as taught to them by their beloved golden retriever Romey.
