Dr. Ewan Wolff is a small animal internal medicine specialist with 14 years of experience as a veterinarian and 13 years of experience in internal medicine. They grew up in Washington, DC, but their earliest memories are of traveling during multiple summers with their family to go canoeing near Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. They first visited Vancouver in 1989 and the city and British Columbia made an indelible impression. Though they visited in between, it took 36 years to move here, and they’re honored to have the opportunity to serve this community.
Dr. Wolff’s career started in dinosaur paleopathology (and they still work on this research) but in 2004 they put on a borrowed scrub top and started volunteering at local veterinary clinics while finishing their PhD. Three years later they went to veterinary school at University of Wisconsin where they developed a keen interest in complex medical management, and urogenital and colorectal disease.
They entered a residency program in small animal internal medicine in 2013, on a journey that took them first to Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand and then to finish their program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, They then went on to complete an ACVIM Foundation Advanced Clinical Training Fellowship in Nephrology and Urology. Since then, they have founded three internal medicine services, and practiced veterinary medicine in three countries and in multiple university and private practice settings. Prior to coming to VAERC, they were an internist at a specialty practice on the North Shore and have greatly enjoyed getting to know the local community in the Vancouver Metropolitan area and on Vancouver Island.
They have joined the internal medicine department at VCA VAERC to tackle longterm and complicated medical conditions. They are focused on patient outcomes, with an emphasis on pragmatism, team collaboration and communication. Our internal medicine department receives direct referrals from primary care veterinarians as well as working with other departments within the hospital. Dr. Wolff has additional background and skills in nephrology and urology and minimally invasive endoscopic and interventional procedures; however they have spent significant time in practice focused on general medicine issues like chronic diarrhea, complex endocrine disease, hepatic conditions, auto-immune diseases, infectious disease and respiratory disease.
When Dr. Wolff is not on the clinic floor at VAERC they enjoy hiking, activities on or around the water, exploring the numerous cultural and outdoor activities around Vancouver with their family, cooking, playing the banjo inexpertly, crafting, and studying the diseases of dinosaurs and their kin.
