Dr. Carl Porter was born in London, England, and immigrated to Canada in 1992. He completed a BSc in Zoology at the University of Bristol, U.K. in 1992. Dr. Porter studied veterinary medicine at the University of Bristol and at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College, and was awarded his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine by the Ontario Veterinary College in 1995. After a year spent in small animal practice in Bolton, Connecticut, he returned to the OVC for a small animal medicine and surgery internship (1996-1997). He completed a residency in small animal surgery at the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine and attained a MVSc in Small Animal Surgery in 2000. Dr. Porter achieved Diplomate status (specialty board certification) with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2001.
Prior to his involvement in the creation of the Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital, Dr. Porter spent 6 years with Morningside Animal Clinic preceded by three years as Staff Surgeon at the MSPCA’s Rowley Memorial Animal Hospital, a multispecialty referral hospital in Western Massachusetts where he was involved with the hospital’s extensive internship program in addition to clinical surgical duties.
Dr. Porter’s areas of special interest include trauma surgery, reconstructive surgery and thoracic surgery. He lives in Claremont, Ontario with his partner and his three children. Dr. Porter enjoys mountain biking, kayaking, skiing and watching his kids hockey and ringette.
